Chapter Thirty
“Jesus Christ,” Julie whispered a few minutes later as she pulled the bedroom door shut and hurried over to join Craig on the darkened landing. “That little girl is...”
Her voice trailed off as she tried to find the right word.
“Nuts?” Craig suggested.
“Damaged,” she continued. “She's exhausted, I finally got her to rest, but...” She glanced over at the door again, to make sure they weren't being overheard, and then she turned to him. “She told me that the smelly guy killed her father. Like, she reckons he hacked his head open with an ax!”
“Gross,” Craig replied, his eyes wide with awe. He paused for a moment. “You don't think... I mean, you don't think it's true, do you?”
She shook her head. “It can't be. That kind of stuff just doesn't happen, and she came out with a load of other stuff about a witch and a gold coin, but... It's pretty messed-up that a little girl would even make up a story like that, isn't it? Did you see the look in her eyes? Something definitely isn't right with her. It's like she's really, really...” She tried to think of a better word, but finally she realized there was only one that really described her impression of Becca. “Damaged,” she said again. “So, so damaged. I just want to hug her and make everything okay.”
“Try talking to Captain No-Wash,” Craig replied, rolling his eyes. “The man is intense!”
“Still no word from Kerry,” Julie muttered, checking her phone. “What do you think we should do? Wait 'til morning and then call social services?”
“Kerry'll be along eventually. Right now, I just wanna hear more from the crazy guy downstairs. I don't know what his deal is, but he's blatantly committed to whatever act he's trying to put on. Like, I think he actually believes some of the stuff he says.”
“Like what?”
“About witchcraft and sin and the modern world.” He sighed. “Do you know what he's doing right now? I showed him how to use my laptop. It took a little while, 'cause at first he thought it was some kind of sorcery. He'd never used a mouse or a track-pad before, it was like he'd never even seen a screen! But I showed him some stuff and after that he learned kinda fast. Faster than my grandparents, anyway. So I found some websites about history and now he's reading through them. Says he needs to catch up on what's been happening over the past few centuries.” He rolled his eyes. “Apart from the smell, he's actually pretty cool to talk to.”
Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a small bag of weed.
“No!” Julie hissed.
“Oh, this is the perfect time to smoke,” he told her. “Trust me.”
“We need to keep clear heads,” she continued. “Please, Craig.”
Sighing, he stuffed the bag back into his pocket.
“We can't leave Becca alone with him,” Julie continued. “There's no way we can let that sweet little girl walk out the door with that... disgusting old man!”
He nodded.
“So we need to call someone,” she added.
